I look forward to embarking on this joyful journey with you!
The Story Behind the Name Coco Joy
The name Coco came from when I was learning to talk. Instead of saying “Nicole” I said “Co-Cole” which got shortened to Coco. It became a nickname throughout my childhood and in the past few years I’ve embraced it in my professional life.
The name Joy is a longer, more interesting story. In 1995, I worked at an upscale dining establishment in North Carolina which was where I went to college. One evening my manager told me I would be serving the renowned Dr. Maya Angelou!
As the night came to a close, I seized the moment. With a piece of paper bearing the restaurant's emblem, I approached Dr. Angelou with a humble request for her autograph. She graciously complied, writing my name at the top, her iconic signature at the bottom, and a single, meaningful word: "Joy” in the middle. The signed memento found its place in a box, gradually fading from my immediate consciousness.

Decades later, during a women's retreat, I was randomly assigned the character of "Joy" to act out for a skit. In the weeks that followed, people from the retreat began calling me Joy and at a women's luncheon just a few weeks later we were all given random mugs to take home. You guessed it - my mug bore the word "Joy."
The “joy whispers” continued. While sorting through personal belongings months later, I stumbled upon Dr. Maya Angelou's autograph, with the inscription of "Joy." It dawned on me that maybe something greater than myself was orchestrating a central theme to my life. As life continued, I found myself going through some very difficult times. Yet even in the murkiness and hardships, I somehow discovered joy in it, too.
These collective moments have led me to accept that "Joy" is my purpose and the launching of Coco Joy is yet another thread in that tapestry.
